Jesse Reno’s boyhood home was here where his father, Lewis, operated a hotel. He left in 1842 to enter the US Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1846 as a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps.
After distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, he continued his Army career, with commands in Washington, D.C. in the West and South.
Summoned to lead a command during the Civil War, he was killed on September 14, 1862, in the battle of South Mountain, Maryland.
